I decide to cook steak and potatoes on the grill and whatever else Aisling is craving. She eats a lot throughout the day so she can keep her milk supply up, so I’ll make extra food in case she gets hungry while I’m asleep. I also make sure the seasoning on the meat isn’t heavy . . . it’s the only drawback to her breastfeeding. She can’t have anything spicy, it could mess with Cailin.

Ezekiel arrives and he has an armful of presents, including a human-sized panda bear.

“I would have loved to see you put that bear in your car,” Aisling states and giggles when she sees him walk in the house.

“Oh, I’m sure you would have.” He rolls his eyes. “Where’s my nephew?”

“He’s taking a nap. I’m sure he’ll be up in thirty minutes,” Aisling states as she relaxes deeper into the couch.

“Good, that gives me time to have a talk with you,” I say to Ezekiel, breaking into their conversation.

“Sounds good.” Ezekiel brings his gaze to mine, and the two of us lock eyes.

He follows me outside to where I’m manning the grill.

“I’m just going to come out and say this. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been an asshole and treated Aisling and you like shit. I let everything snowball out of control and it turned into a shitshow. I’m lucky to be here, I know that. I’m sorry that I punched you . . . I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you man to man. I’ll spend every day showing Aisling and everyone else I’m sorry for the pain I’ve caused.”

“All you had to do was answer the phone . . . Why didn’t you?”

“Pride. I don’t know.” I shake my head in shame and look into the depths of the grill. “I was scared because I was falling for her, and I thought I didn’t want to be attached to someone.” I blow out a breath, lift my gaze, and meet his once again. “Shit, man, thought she deserved someone better than me. Someone not stained by his job.” I know Ezekiel knows what I do, and he’s not going to say shit to anyone because his own job teeters the line between right and wrong.

“I guess I can understand where you’re coming from, but you destroyed her.” He nods.

“I know, she told me, and she made sure to let me know how bad I hurt her.”

“You did. If you would have opened your eyes earlier, you would have seen that Aisling is like another sister to me, not a lover. And I will do whatever it takes to protect her.”

“I regret the shit I’ve done and will spend the rest of my life, if she lets me, making it right. I appreciate you for that. I’m glad you were there for her because I couldn’t get my head out of my ass.”

“Anything for Aisling.”

We continue talking and we end our conversation with a bro hug.

I get the food off the grill and take it inside. Zoe and Marc are inside talking to Aisling while she feeds Cailin.
